Reverse osmosis (RO) is a multi-stage water purification process that uses a semi-permeable membrane and pressure to remove contaminants from water. RO effectively filters out dissolved solids, ions, molecules, microorganisms, and larger particles, providing clean water for drinking and cooking.
Key benefits of RO water filtration include the removal of up to 99% of total dissolved solids, chemicals, microorganisms, and particulates. RO improves water taste, smell, and appearance by reducing contaminants. It also retains healthy minerals like calcium and magnesium. RO delivers cleaner, fresher water from every water source in your home.
RO systems require regular maintenance, like sediment filter changes every 3-6 months and replacement of the RO membrane every 2-5 years, depending on usage and water quality. Annual sanitization of the storage tank is also recommended. Overall maintenance is relatively low compared to the purification benefits.
Installation involves positioning the tank and filter housings, connecting tubing to the existing cold water line under the sink, installing a separate faucet, flushing the system, checking for leaks, and programming settings. The process takes 2-3 hours, followed by membrane conditioning over 1-2 days.
RO filtration has a water recovery ratio of 25-35% due to the rejection of dissolved solids. So, 2-3 gallons of water are wasted for every purified gallon produced. Newer systems use permeate pumps to improve the efficiency and recovery ratio.
Reverse osmosis systems use a multi-stage filtration process, starting with prefilters that remove sediment, chlorine, and particulates. The RO membrane itself rejects dissolved solids and ions. Finally, a post-carbon filter polishes the water before delivery. Prefilters require replacement every 3-6 months. RO membranes last 2-5 years, depending on water quality and usage. Post filters are replaced annually. Using factory-approved filters ensures optimal contaminant removal and extended system lifespan.
Replacing RO filters regularly is essential for system performance and water quality. For the prefilter, shut off the water supply and switch the 3-way valve to the filter position. Unscrew the housing, remove the old cartridge, clean the housing with mild soap, and rinse thoroughly. Insert the new cartridge, reattach the housing, and switch the valve back to the operating position. Run water for several minutes to flush. RO membrane and post-filter changes follow similar steps. Be sure to sanitize system components during maintenance.
Reverse osmosis systems operate best with input water pressure between 40-80 psi to enable effective filtration through the membrane. Check your home’s water pressure. Consistently low pressure below 40 psi may require a booster pump. High pressure over 80 psi risks damaging RO components, requiring a pressure regulator. Use an in-line pressure gauge during installation and monitor periodically to ensure optimal psi for efficiency and longevity. Contact a water specialist for pressure adjustments.
With customizable system capacities and configurations, Realtrue provides options for every home. Our RO systems are rigorously tested and certified to strict performance standards for confidence in the purification results.
